Urban Forest Bathing
May 5, 20242:00 pmToronto, CanadaMore info
Ready to slow down and experience the serenity of nature amidst the city's hustle? Let certified forest therapy guide, Emma Rooney, from Blooming Caravan, take you on a sensory adventure to discover the 401 Richmond rooftop garden. This is your chance to recharge your mind, body, and spirit with a unique “nature prescription.” Expect to move a little more slowly, to take time to notice all our non-human city neighbours, and to tune into nature's vibrant pulse humming above the city. End the experience with your new friends with an exclusive opportunity to see our Toronto Gone Wild exhibition. What is "forest bathing"? Here is an excerpt from Ontario Parks: "Forest bathing, forest therapy, or Shinrin-yoku, was developed in Japan in the 1980s. The idea is that when humans spend time in a natural setting, especially under the canopy of a forest, they experience rejuvenating benefits to the mind, body and spirit. This is not a novel concept. Traditionally people sought the restorative benefits of the forest as part of their everyday life." Check out what these sources have to say about forest bathing. Time Magazine, National Geographic, Association of Nature & Forest Therapy. Let the 401 Richmond rooftop garden be your urban oasis and find out why you don't have to leave the city to reconnect with nature. Meet Your Guide Emma Rooney is a certified forest therapy guide with the Association of Nature & Forest Therapy. "I’ve been fortunate to work with many innovative urban organizations, from the High Park Children’s Garden to Greenest City in Parkdale and Ecosource in Mississauga. As a community programmer, I’ve enjoyed using my skills to support diverse populations and age groups with getting involved in important environmental and social justice issues. I’m the horticultural therapy practitioner at Copernicus Lodge Long-Term Care and a volunteer at the High Park Nature Centre. I’m also a certified forest therapy guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy." She is the founder of Blooming Caravan, an organization built on the idea that aging at home can be graceful, playful, and meaningful. Explore the experiences offered by Blooming Caravan here. About the Museum of Toronto We are Toronto's city museum. We offer experiences that tell the histories of Toronto. Enjoy our programming in our downtown exhibition space, throughout the city, and online. Museum of Toronto is Getting Toronto, Together. We are made possible with the generous support of Diane Blake and Stephen Smith. What is Toronto Gone Wild? Toronto Gone Wild is our latest exhibition. Toronto Gone Wild explores the city as a multi-layered habitat — starring the animals, plants, and insects that call Toronto home. You will venture through different Torontonian terrains from city streets to burrows, hives, and nests, all seamlessly woven together in our downtown exhibition space. See for yourself just how much we share with our animal neighbours in the struggle for food, housing, and community. You may have more in common with that white squirrel at Trinity Bellwoods than you think. Accessibility The 401 Richmond Building is accessible to people in wheelchairs and with walking aids. An elevator can take attendees to the rooftop and to accessible-certified washrooms. Museum of Toronto's exhibition is also designed to be navigated by people with wheelchairs and assistive walking devices. Email us at [email protected] if you have any accessibility needs - we'd love to accommodate you and offer more details on the accessibility of the building.

Sessions: Embracing All Your Publishing Options To Maximize Your Revenue Speaker: Mark Leslie Lefebvre Writers have never had more opportunity and options than ever before in the history of publishing. When it comes to earning revenue as an author, writing and publishing a book is just one of many ways to earn money. What are the various ways an author can maximize their revenue, forge multiple income streams, and effectively exploit their IP to gain the most benefit from their earning potential? Seven Productivity Myths and Why You Should Stop Believing Them Speaker: Becca Syme When people throw around advice about productivity, there are some old staples that don’t actually apply to everyone. The goal of this session is to deconstruct how to apply advice to you as an individual, and to help you have a sustainable author career. Marketing Strategy 101 Speaker: Tao Wong Marketing Strategy for Authors is designed to illuminate the process of developing a marketing strategy as an author in the 21st century. It provides a high level, strategic overview of the components of a comprehensive marketing plan that is flexible, focused and uniquely tailored to an author’s writing career. Writing What You Love To Market Speaker: Eva Chase If you’ve spent much time in the indie publishing world, you’ve probably heard the phrase “write to market” as a key strategy for success. It’s often presented as the opposite of writing what you love, but what if you can do both? This workshop will give you proven techniques for reaching broader audiences while keeping the joy of writing. The Anatomy of a Best-Selling Book Cover Speaker: Sylvia Frost What is the difference between a pretty piece art and a best-selling book cover? From composition, to trends, to how to get the illusive “pop”, award-winning book cover designer, Sylvia Frost of The Book Brander, uncovers the secrets of book cover design. What Indie Authors Need to Know about Editing Speaker: Genevieve Clovis Editing is an important part of the publishing process, but it can be difficult to know where to start. This presentation will teach indie authors everything they need to know to get started with an editor. It will provide an explanation of the different types of editing, what each type entails, where to find editors, and how to figure out which editor is right for their project. Stuck, Blocked, or Burned Out? Speaker: Becca Syme Everyone’s tossing around the B-word lately. Burnout. And some of us feel a physical recoil when we see that word, so we might be afraid to think about or talk about times when we’re not writing, for fear of someone using that B-word. But there are lots of reasons we might not be writing, and some of them are even about another b-word… beneficial. So come to this talk and learn, when might not-writing be good for me? How to Master Facebook Ads Strategy Speaker: Melissa Storm The market is constantly changing. Tech is always changing too. This is why it’s so important to master strategy rather than simply learning tactics. We’ll discuss major roadblocks and how to navigate a new path for success with Facebook ads. Create an Additional Revenue Stream with Audiobooks Speaker: Robin Siegerman and Senn Annis Talk all things audiobooks with narrators Robin Siegerman and Senn Annis! They’ll walk you through the process of how to have an audiobook produced,

Cover Me Urban - Rexdale
May 2, 202410:30 pmToronto, CanadaMore info
Cover Me Urban - Rexdale Youth Without Shelter – commonly known as ‘YWS’ – is a charity offering shelter and support for youth facing homelessness in the GTA. Since our founding in 1986, we have been providing client-focused services in a non-judgmental environment for youth aged 16 – 24. Located in North Etobicoke, we are a house where a youth’s culture and needs are understood, and where each youth can receive shelter, one-on-one guidance, mental health and wellness supports, and training, through our wrap-around model of programming. Toronto is recognized as one of the most diverse cities in the world. Over 250 ethnicities and 180 languages are represented here. For the past 9 years, Cover Me Urban has been a celebration of our diversity. We come together for a special night to celebrate the culture-rich neighbourhoods of Toronto for an electric evening of urban sights and sounds. We sample street foods prepared by local Toronto Chefs, enjoy visual arts, music and entertainment, all while supporting and bringing awareness to youth within our city who struggle with the realities of homelessness. While celebrating our diversity, CMU fundraising events have always represented different cultures and communities by having “neighbourhoods” in our venues to embody the spirit of Toronto. Each year, Cover Me Urban takes inspiration from one of our cultural neighbourhoods of Toronto. We aim to explore and learn about our communities while raising awareness to the thousands of youth within them who struggle to find a safe place to call home. Last year, for our first stop in our Neighbourhood Series, we looked back to our roots, exploring the original neighbourhood and meeting place on this land – Tkaronto. Working alongside First Nations, knowledge holders, artists, and organizations within our community, “CMU – Tkaronto, The Original Meeting Place” was a collaborative celebration of the origins of our city – the original meeting place. Our next stop in our Neighbourhood Series takes us a bit closer to home where we’ll be celebrating the Community of Rexdale! Home to YWS for over 35 years, Rexdale is known for its diversity and resilience, making it a great example of the strength that can be found in local communities when people come together to support one another. Rexdale is a remarkable and culturally diverse community, where residents from all corners of the world come together to create a rich and vibrant mosaic. The strength of Rexdale lies in its unity, celebrating a blend of traditions, languages, and customs. At the heart of Rexdale's vitality are its youth - a strong, inspiring generation who embraces their heritage while working to shape a brighter future for not only themselves but their community at large. Building and supporting this local community is not just a commitment; it's a celebration of the unique talents, stories, and potential that reside within. CMU 2024 will be a celebration of resilience, growth, and hope for a better tomorrow.
