Remote Scottish lodge used to house foreign secret agents in WWII up for sale

Remote Scottish lodge used to house foreign secret agents in WWII up for sale

A remote lodge in the Scottish Highlands is now on the market, and its story is something out of a spy novel. During World War II, this quiet country house served a secret role. Agents who could no longer carry out missions but knew important classified information were sent here for safe-keeping. They lived under watchful eyes, doing simple tasks to distract them from troubling thoughts of the conflict at large.

Known as Inverlair Lodge or “No 6 Special Workshop School” during wartime, the estate was requisitioned by Britain’s War Office and used by the Special Operations Executive, a secret group specializing in espionage, sabotage and guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines. It wasn’t a prison, but it wasn’t freedom either. Agents from countries like the Netherlands and Italy were allowed to roam the grounds or make limited trips into town — but they were carefully isolated from the local community so they wouldn’t accidentally reveal sensitive information.

After the war ended and the agency was disbanded, Inverlair Lodge fell into neglect. But in the 1970s, a new owner stepped in and restored the home, giving it new life while preserving much of its character. In 2008, it changed hands again, and the current owners have continued that work, updating key systems like heating and installing double‑glazed windows, all while keeping original features such as curved inner walls, detailed cornices, and old fireplaces intact.

Today, this historic lodge is being offered for sale through a real estate agency. The asking price starts at over £1.35 million. The property includes six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a spacious conservatory, a lovely updated kitchen, and a utility room. Outside, you'll find nearly 31 acres of land with woods, a wetland area, outbuildings, and even a small cottage.

The lodge sits in a breathtaking setting along the River Spean, with views of Creag Meagaidh and Ben Alder. It’s tucked away from tourist crowds yet within reach of outdoor activity hubs. There are world-class walking trails, skiing and biking at Nevis Range, fishing, shooting, stalking, and hill walks nearby. A single-track road leads out into quiet paths and waymarked Munro trails.

Inverlair Lodge is more than just a grand home—it’s a piece of history, a reminder of a time when secrecy and sabotage shaped global events. Now, someone else has the chance to own a place that blends serene Highland beauty, modern comfort, and a truly remarkable wartime story.
