The town of Moosomin in southeastern Saskatchewan is experiencing a surge in construction due to a new housing incentive program. In August 2024, the town began offering $30,000 cheques to individuals building homes in the community, aiming to address a pressing need for more housing.
This initiative has led to significant development, including the construction of two 12-unit apartment complexes and a six-unit building. Additionally, building permits have been issued for two houses and a basement suite. Casey McCormac, the town's economic development officer, expressed enthusiasm about the program's success, noting it highlights both the demand for housing and the community's appeal.
The funding for this program comes from the federal government's housing accelerator fund, from which Moosomin received $1 million. The town offers builders $30,000 for the first new unit and an additional $8,000 per extra unit on the same property. Builders receive the funds once occupancy permits are issued, ensuring that the homes are ready for residents.
With a population of approximately 2,600, Moosomin has faced a tight housing market, with homes being quickly purchased and limited rental options. The town serves as a regional hub, offering amenities like a hospital and various services. Its proximity to major employers, such as Nutrien Ltd.'s Rocanville potash mine, located just a 25-minute drive away, makes it an attractive place for workers seeking residence.
The success of the housing incentive program is evident, with building permits issued for 33 units, surpassing the initial goal of three units needed to continue funding. McCormac mentioned that 10 more units remain eligible for funding and expressed interest in continuing similar initiatives in the future to meet the ongoing demand for housing.
Residents of Moosomin are excited about the community's growth. Town Councillor Murray Gray highlighted the town's diverse economy and the positive impact of recent developments, including new daycares and a busy hospital with 14 doctors. He believes the housing incentive program will further boost the town's population and prosperity.
